Police, firefighters endorse Battle
Organizations representing Huntsville police and firefighters announced Thursday they were endorsing incumbent mayor Tommy Battle for re-election. Battle faces former mayor Loretta Spencer and Jackie Reed in the Aug. 28 contest.

City officials, including Mayor Tommy Battle, toured Optimist Park on Oakwood Avenue Friday to see the progress of the expansion project currently going on there.
The park is currently undergoing a half-million dollar renovation including more acreage, parking areas, and equipment.

Candidates for Mayor of Huntsville and Mayor of Madison appeared before a meeting of the Republican Women of Huntsville Tuesday at The Ledges clubhouse.
Speaking were Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle, and his challengers Loretta Spencer and Jackie Reed. Also speaking were Madison mayoral candidates Don Palmer and Troy Trulock.

Elizabeth Smart talks about 2002 kidnapping ordeal
Elizabeth Smart, who was kidnapped at age 14 and held for 9 months, told her story Thursday during a luncheon for Crestwood Medical Center’s Healthy Woman program.
Smart, now 24, was abducted in 2002 from her Salt Lake City bedroom. Her captors were caught and eventually sentenced to long terms in prison.

Saturn V gunfire damage being repaired
Repairs are underway to the Saturn V rocket damaged by gunfire last month. Crews are fixing damage caused by two bullets which police say were fired from the area of I-565.
