Big Spring Jam Rocks Downtown

By William T. Martin
HuntsvilleNewswire

A huge crowd descended upon downtown Huntsville Friday evening as Big Spring Jam XVI got off to a loud but mostly uneventful start.
Music fans by the thousands crowded the three stages while bands such as Cowboy Mouth, 12 Stones, and Lee Greenwood performed simultaneously.
The sounds of Christian, rock, and country music drifted through the night air, as did the scent of many types of food from a large array of vendors.
Throughout the area were old favorites such as burgers and chicken to more exotic greek and hispanic offerings.
For the thirsty, there were all types of beverages.
Coke and other soft drinks for the young to stronger refreshments for those of age.
Ensuring the night stayed fun and safe was a small but ubiquitous army of emergency services personnel.
City and county officers joined with firefighters and paramedics to direct traffic, staff entrances, and respond to any incident that might occur.
The Jam continues Saturday evening and wraps up Sunday.
Total attendance is expected to exceed 200,000.

When part of the Von Braun Center receives a major improvement next year, it will be named in honor of a man who loved music his whole life.
Thanks to a large donation from his family foundation, the new facility will be known as the Mark C. Smith Concert Hall.
The announcement was made at a ceremony Tuesday afternoon at the VBC.

Huntsville one of nation's "Playful Cities"

The city of Huntsville has been named as a “Playful City USA,” one of only 67 cities in the country to earn the title.
The honor was announced at a press conference Monday afternoon at Mayfair Park.
“If you like to play,” said Mayor Loretta Spencer, “you’re in the right town.”
In order to apply for the distinction, the city completed an extensive inspection and survey of its 44 parks.
Details of the city’s recreation facilities, including photos, were sent in about 3 months ago.
Kaboom and qubo sponsored the Playful City program. Kaboom is a national non-profit focusing on creating play areas within walking distance of every child in America.
