(From release) Mayor Tommy Battle announced a new KaBOOM playground is coming soon to Lakewood Park on York Road in North Huntsville. The $40,000 playground will feature a variety of play equipment along with an expansive open space and running area.
The playground is being made possible, in part, through a $15,000 grant from KaBOOM, a non-profit created by the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group to support play spaces within walking distance of every child in America.
“We are proud to have been named as a Playful City USA by KaBOOM for the past three years for our commitment to providing a park in every neighborhood of this city.” said Mayor Battle. “Now KaBOOM has honored us again with our second Community Construction Project grant, and I believe it’s because Huntsville citizens are incredibly generous in offering their time and talent to build a playground for children,”
KaBOOM’s Community Construction Projects ask volunteers to construct the new playgrounds so that they are invested in the success and use of the play space. Mayor Battle anticipates the Lakewood playground will be built in just one day.
Just last year, hundreds of volunteers helped construct another major playground for the James A. Lane Boys & Girls Club in Lincoln Village, courtesy of a KaBOOM and Home Depot grant.
In addition to the elaborate new play space, the City’s Parks & Recreation and Community Development Departments will spend another $35,000 on improvements to Lakewood Park. This includes a new pavilion with tables for picnics and activities, sidewalks, and an attractive split rail fence to replace the old chain link version.
“Anytime we can enhance our parks and make them more inviting for families is a good thing,” said Steve Ivey, Manager of Recreation Services. “In our bigger parks like this one, we like to offer a combination of recreation facilities, green space for passive enjoyment, pavilions for picnics, and walking trails. We look forward to including more of these features in the future at Lakewood Park.”
The City currently has 66 public playgrounds, comprised of 42 City of Huntsville parks and 24 Huntsville City School playgrounds.
